The group sets up outside with folding stools, a small pan set of watercolours, and paper heavy enough not to buckle. You are shown three things: how much water is too much water, how to lay a flat wash, and how to stop before the whole thing turns to mud. Then you paint a tree, a fence, a boat, or the person sitting next to you.

Beginners are the target and beginners are most of the room. It is quiet work, which suits people who find a busy hall hard going. Children eight and up manage it well. Younger ones mostly paint water rather than pictures, and that is a perfectly good outcome. Bring a hat.
